LET ME EXPLAIN SOMETHING..
Converting to Islam forgives previous sin. However, it does not remove the effects of
dysfunction, disorder, insanity, and the negative consequences resulting from your previous life as an unbeliever. Weather you were a heathen, mushrik, Christian, Black nationalist, feminist, street corner philosopher, atheist, run of the mill assembly-line kaafir or whatever you were before Islam, the negative effects, and the wayward psychology resulting from a sinful nature prior to Islam, is still there.
Nor does the shahaada to Islam erase the effects of your trauma, drug use your emotional imbalances, your mommy issues, your daddy issues, your baby momma and baby daddy issues, your trust issues, honesty issues, unresolved childhood issues, your decietful nature if you have one, your game playing, your your hatred of the opposite sex, lack of loyalty, your self-delusion, and the other diseases of the heart that you know about, and the ones you don’t know about.
Your shahaada to Islam does not, I repeat does not, remove the effects of all that. Unless….
Unless you come all the way into Islam, and still it takes time. Thats why Allah sub’haanahu wa ta’ala says, “O you who have believed, enter into Islam all the way, and do not follow the steps of the devil, for he is a clear enemy to you” 2:208. Sometimes it takes a lifetime. That’s why the main focus has to be on yourself. That’s why Umar Ibn. al-Khattab said, “call yourselves into account before you are called into account”. That’s why it’s important also to know thyself, and not be in denial about your issues because, invariably, many of those issues will follow you into Islam.
To do Islam properly, use the tools that Allah provided us with. Like, taqwa, sincerity, belief in Allah,, taubah (repentance), shukr (gratitude), thikr (remembrance of Allah), belief in the qadr, belief in the Day of judgement, and obedience to Allah and His Messenger. If you differ in a matter, take it back to Quran and Sunna.
The other thing is, the good qualities that you had before you become Muslim, will assist you in your Islam, if you understand Islam. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “the best of you in jaahiliyya is the best of you in Islam they understand”. The quickest way to achieve good Islam is by obeying Allah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. And know that you cannot get any closer to Allah except by doing what He commands of you. Your goal as a Muslim should be to fear Allah, be upright, and always aim at doing what is right. And Allah knows best.
