JUST SO EVERYONE IS CLEAR
There is no daleel (proof) from our scriptures (Quran and Hadith) that calling yourself Salafi, Sufi, Shafi’ee, Maliki, Hanifi, Hanbali, Thahiri, Ash’aree, Ahuls-Sunna, Ahlul-Hadith, or Ansaar-Assunna, makes you more beloved to Allah, makes your deeds worth more to Allah, makes you more pious, or brings you closer to jannah, or farther away from the hellfire. No daleel at all.
Labeling yourself with these titles is not prohibited in most cases, unless you claim that labeling yourself with one of these titles in mandatory in our religion, in which case, doing so is prohibited.
Following the minhaj of the Salaf is required in order to have a correct understanding of Islam, our laws, and our creed, and what it means based upon the earliest sources. However, following the knowledge laid down by the Salaf of our ummah, and merely claiming to follow the Salaf is two different things. The proof of one’s deen is in what they do, not in what they say.
Granted, these labels and sub-titles have utility and accepted functionality within Islam and Islamic law. However, these titles by themselves are not doors to salvation. None of these labels or titles should ever be used to divide and create enmity between the Muslims.
The battle against Iblis and his forces, and the goal and command to save yourselves, and your families from the hellfire fire requires a lot more than slapping a label on yourself, thinking it’s a shield. These mean nothing to Iblis.
