From the towering plumes of Canadian wildfire smoke that darken skies thousands of miles away, and here at home, to the scorched earth left in the wake of relentless flames, and wild fires, from catastrophic, nation-spanning floods that swallow highways and homes, to torrential rains that turn Philadelphia streets into surging rivers, to the tornadoes in the most unlikeliest of places our world is speaking a language we can no longer afford to ignore.
Tornadoes carve paths of ruin with frightening regularity. Mysterious, unfamiliar illnesses surface without warning. Even the very food on our tables like lettuce and bread rolls becomes vessels for harm.
For the believer, these are not random misfortunes or mere statistical spikes in a changing climate. They are ayaat, signs from Allah, sub’haanahu wa ta’ala, placed before our eyes so that we might pause, reflect, and recognize a profound truth: humanity has strayed, and the natural order groans under the weight of that disobedience.
The earth and its elements are, by their original nature, submissive to their Creator. When they convulse and rebel, it is a mirror reflecting our own collective rebellion against the One God. These events are a divine mercy disguised as hardship, a merciful jolt meant to wake us from heedlessness before a greater reckoning arrives. They strip away the illusion of human control, reminding us that the same water that gives life can, by His permission, sweep life away; that the same fire that warms can, by His command, consume everything we have built.
This is a call to tawbah, a sincere return to Allah. It is an invitation for humanity to turn away from the worship of its own desires, innovations, and systems, and to turn back to the obedience of the One who created the heavens and the earth. Repentance is not merely the utterance of regret; it is the mending of the relationship between the Creator and the created, a restoration of the balance of justice and mercy in our lives.
Let these signs not pass by as just another news cycle, passively consumed and scrolled past. Let them sink into the heart. They are a warning, a reminder, and an open door to return. Our salvation, individually and collectively, lies in reflection, repentance, and a wholehearted return to the obedience of the one God.
“And We will surely make them taste some of the lesser punishment before the greater punishment, so that perhaps they may return.” 32:21
“Indeed, Allah is not ashamed to present an example—that of a mosquito or what is even smaller than it. As for those who believe, they know it is the truth from their Lord; but as for those who disbelieve, they say, “What did Allah intend by this example?” He leads many astray thereby and guides many thereby; and He leads none astray thereby except the defiantly disobedient.” May Allah sub’haanahu wa ta’ala make us not of the blind to His signs. May He save us from being of the headless. May He protect us from His wrath, and forive us of our sins, and may He make us of those who bear witness. Ameen. Imam Abu Laith Luqman Ahmad
