Question: Can a Muslim woman leave her hair uncovered in the presence of her stepson, or father in law?
Answer: Yes, a Muslim woman is permitted to uncover her hair, neck, and forearms in front of both her stepson (her husband’s biological son) and her father-in-law (her husband’s father). Both individuals are considered permanent mahrams (unmarriageable kin) due to marriage (musahara).
The Daleel (Evidence)
The primary proof for this ruling is explicitly found in the Quran in Surah An-Nur (24:31), where Allah outlines who a woman is allowed to display her adornments (such as her hair, ears, neck, and arms) in front of:
“…and not display their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husbands’ fathers, or their sons, or their husbands’ sons, or their brothers, or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their women, or that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women…”
The Father-in-Law: Included in the verse under the phrase “or their husbands’ fathers” (wa aba’I bu’ulatihina).
The Stepson: Included in the verse under the phrase “or their husbands’ sons” (wa abna’I bu’ulatihina).
View of the Sunni Madhaahib
All four major Sunni schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’I, and Hanbali) are in unanimous agreement on this ruling.
Status of Mahram: Once a valid marriage contract is completed (and consummated), the husband’s father and the husband’s biological sons become eternal mahrams to the wife. This relationship remains intact even if the husband passes away or if the couple divorces.
Permissible Extent of Exposure: In front of a mahram like a father-in-law or stepson, a woman may uncover what is traditionally defined as zeenah khafiyyah (hidden adornments)—which includes the head, hair, face, neck, ears, arms, and feet—as long as modesty is maintained and there is no fear of fitnah (temptation or inappropriate behavior).
This is the correct ruling on this issue and there is no dissenting opinion in any of the sunni madhaahib. And Allah knows best. Imam Abu Laith Luqman Ahmad
