IN LIGHT OF OUR NEWFOUND LOVE AFFAIR WITH PSYCHOLOGY , CONSIDER THIS..by Imam Luqman Ahmad

It is a well-established fact that Sigmund Freud, a central figure in the development of modern Western psychology, was an atheist. Given this foundation, it should be of no surprise that certain psychological frameworks may occasionally conflict with the principles of   Tawheed   (the Oneness of Allah).

While it would be absurd to condemn the entire field of psychology, since as Muslims we are encouraged to seek beneficial knowledge that preserves our faith and well-being. That is a given. However, a critical critical distinction must be made between the two sciences.

Modern psychology must be governed by the Deen, rather than acting as its governor or replacing it as the primary source of guidance.

Within the context of the Black American Muslim community, there is a burgeoning sentiment that most if not all of us are suffering from inherent trauma or mental dysfunction requiring external “fixing.” Some contemporary authors have leaned heavily into this narrative, and added spiritual trauma as a psycholgical condition that requires fixing.

As Muslims, we must remain vigilant. We should be cautious of a “Trojan horse” effect, where secular therapeutic models are adopted so uncritically that they begin to displace spiritual solutions and the inherent resilience found in Islam. Because after all, we are Muslims.

We must distinguish between legitimate clinical needs and the “pathologizing” of the Black experience, which can sometimes lead to a cycle of perpetual victimhood, as we have seen in our own lived experiences.

Beneficial psychological insights should be filtered through an Islamic worldview to ensure they align with our ultimate purpose, which is to worship Allah sub’haanahu wa ta’ala.

“True health is not merely the absence of psychological trauma, but the presence of a sound heart ( Qalbun Salim ) in its relationship with its Creator.” This is my position. And Allah knows best. Imam Abu Laith Luqman Ahmad
